Phenomenal

A project with Agata Jaworska

Phenomenal is a system for curatorship similar to the game of connecting the dots. The dots are represented by images that clearly belong to the world of design/art/architecture, while the connecting lines are a number of other videos of any kind and sort, which by logic or aesthetic association lead to the next destination.

Just like Diet Coke + Mentos = eruption, also the world of design is part of the ephemeral and popular culture consumed on our screens. Design moves and spreads through social networks and sharing platforms, merging with the world of home videos, communication campaigns and anything that is moving images. In this way, design reaches anyone, transversally and indistinctively, thus becoming viral. And so, you find your spammer Facebook friends sharing MoMA's videos that you thought were sophisticated design. And, indeed, they are.

Phenomenal is not intended much as a mean to monitor the world of design, but rather to explore the degrees of separation between the design world and the rest of the on-line universe, where time is regulated by the syndrome of the eternal scrolling. Phenomenal is indeed phenomenal, but in the scientific sense of the term. That is, the resulting amalgam of material can be perceived through the senses rather than through reason.

Tangled with tags and hashtags, popular and related, Phenomenal wants to prove that design is neither multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary, but simply undisciplined (cit. Paul Rodgers).
