Moneychanger
The Moneychanger is designed for Design Destinations, an exhibition curated by Domitilla Dardi at MAXXI, the Museum of Arts of the XXI century in Rome (28/05/14 - 05/10/14).

During their educational and professional -
but mainly geographical - roaming in the field of design, Tal and Giovanni have realized that, when you attend a design school populated by international students and teachers, it is as if you went in a country of its own. RCA, ECAL, IDII, DAE... are all acronyms that indicate unique, yet very similar contexts. There, you build a similar attitude, use a similar language and share similar experiences. In this non-geographic country, everyone brings his or her capital of expertise and culture, to convert it into a new currency. This is a sort of design currency.
It is difficult to give a value to the currency minted in these schools. Indeed, those who completed their studies there, then make huge efforts to estimate the value of their new capital and find contexts where to spend or invest it. Exchanging currency after a long trip is a little bit like a gamble, when you return home you always hope to gain something in this trade.
For the exhibition Design Destinations curated by Domitilla Dardi (MAXXI, Rome), Tal and Giovanni have designed a new currency and - most importantly - a currency exchange counter. A simple inkjet printer can print on Euro banknotes. During the opening of the exhibition, visitors will be able to enter their banknotes into the Moneychanger and receive them back converted into a new currency. The new banknotes celebrate the value of exploration. They illustrate the passage into a new territory, interacting with the architectures that characterize Euro banknotes.
This new currency is both priceless and worthless. Or maybe, it simply has the same value as the original one.
Fundamentally, the Moneychanger raises a doubt: how much is the education received in the above-mentioned contexts worth?

Tal Drori e Giovanni Innella si sono dati il cambio in una staffetta, mentre Tal ha lasciato Israele per studiare in Italia all’Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, Giovanni ha lasciato l’Italia per l’Olanda e studiare alla Design Academy Eindhoven. Poi, i due si sono ritrovati nel Regno Unito, dove si incontrano e scambiano idee e pensieri.
Alcuni di questi pensieri riguardano il loro percorso formativo e professionale - ma anche geografico - nel campo della progettazione. Tal e Giovanni hanno realizzato che in fondo, quando si approda ad una scuola di design internazionale, è come se si entrasse in un Paese indipendente. RCA, ECAL, IDII, DA, DAE... sono tutte sigle che indicano contesti molto simili, dove si costruisce un pensiero simile, si parla un linguaggio simile e si fanno esperienze simili. In questo Paese non-geografico ognuno porta il proprio patrimonio di competenze e culture, per convertirlo in una valuta differente.
E’ difficile dare un valore alla moneta battuta in queste scuole. In effetti, chi conclude i propri studi lì poi fa una fatica immane a stimare il valore del capitale raccolto e trovare contesti dove poterlo spendere o investire. Cambiare valuta dopo un lungo viaggio è un po’ come scommettere, quando si torna a casa si spera sempre di guadagnare qualcosa nel cambio.
Per Design Destinations, Tal e Giovanni hanno disegnato una nuova valuta e - soprattutto - un banco di cambiavalute.
Una semplice stampante a getto d’inchiostro può stampare sulle banconote di Euro. Durante la mostra, i visitatori potranno inserire le proprie banconote nella macchina cambiavalute che immediatamente le riconsegnerà convertite nella nuova valuta. Le nuove banconote celebrano il valore dell’esplorazione di un nuovo contesto. Indicano il passaggio in un territorio nuovo, interagendo con le architetture che caratterizzano le banconote di Euro.
La valuta di cui si entra in possesso è allo stesso tempo di valore inestimabile e di nessun valore. O forse dello stesso valore di quella di partenza.
Fondamentalmente il Cambiavalute condivide un dubbio: quanto vale realmente l'educazione ricevuta nelle scuole di cui sopra?
