Giovanni Innella

After graduating in Industrial Design at the Politecnico di Torino in 2004, Giovanni Innella freelanced as a graphic designer and visual designer, to then work for the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea. In 2005 he engaged with Interaction Design Lab, becoming a partner soon after. In 2008 Giovanni graduated cum laude from the IM master course at the Design Academy of Eindhoven and has been selected to exhibit his thesis project at the Droog gallery in Amsterdam and the National Architecture Institute of Maastricht. In 2009 he held the position of Senior Researcher at the Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute. During his career as a designer he worked on projects in Europe and Africa, exhibiting at the International Design Biennale of Saint-Etienne, the Fuorisalone of Milan and the Van Abbe Museum of Eindhoven, amongst other venues. Giovanni’s jewellery piece for brand CHP...? is part of the permanent collection of the Stedelijk Museum of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. With Agata Jaworska, he initiated Institute of Relevant Studies, a network that comes together and collaborates with other Institutes on demand. Currently in a state of beta, IoRS develops new models for business and culture as a form of design and expression. In 2014 Giovanni completed his PhD at Northumbria University. His research aim lies in understanding how the growing presence of design in the media - and the media in design - has impacted the profession of contemporary designers. This also represents his direction for articulating a clearer design critique expressed in both written and visual form.

Currently, Giovanni is an Assistant Professor at Chiba University, Japan.
